21 The Language Policy and Language Development in Ukraine Roundtable Series presents a lecture by Eugene Fishel (U.S. State Department), titled, "Language Preference as a Political Indicator: Results of a Recent Survey in Ukraine." Mr. Fishel will present data from a national survey carried out in Ukraine at the end of 2004. This data, controlled for language to demonstrate differences (or similarities) between Ukrainian- and Russian-speakers, focuses on three main categories of issues: the state of the country, Ukraine's place in the world, and the (then) upcoming presidential election. Film Screening: “Varlam Shalamov: Several of My Lives” (1991, directed by Alexandra Sviridova) The film Varlam Shalamov: Several of My Lives tells the story of Varlam Shalamov, a major twentieth century Russian writer, who spent several years in Stalin's concentration camps. The film weaves together biographical material and the texts of Shalamov's works. The film is in Russian A conversation with the film director, Alexandra Sviridova, will follow. 25 Anna DiLellio (Former Temporary Media Commissioner, UNMIK) “The Legendary Commander: Postwar Kosovo's Master Narrative.” Room 1219 IAB @ Noon.

The Ukrainian poet Oksana Zabuzhko will present and discuss her work. Oksana Zabuzhko's works include the prizewinning collection of stories Oh Sister, My Sister, and the best-selling Field Work in Ukrainian Sex, which was widely translated in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as four collections of poetry, one in English translation (A Kingdom of Fallen Statues) two volumes of literary criticism, and two collections of essays. She received the Global Commitment Foundation Poetry Prize in 1997, as well as numerous other awards. Harriman Institute, 12th floor, 6:30pm.

The Harriman Institute and the Music Bridges International present New Music in St. Petersburg, a lecture-concert featuring Grigori Korchmar, assisted by Yuval Waldman. Grigori Korchman, born in Baltiysk in Kalinigrad, Russia, is a well-known Russian composer and pianist, having performed with orchestras conducted by M. Jansons, and others. Korchmar is also the vice-president of the St. Petersburg Union of Composers and artistic director of the St. Petersburg Spring festival. Yuval Waldman is an acclaimed Russian-born violinist and conductor. The lecture-concert will take place at the Sulzberger Parlor (Barnard Hall, 3 rd Floor) @ 6 pm.

Oldřich Škácha has been Havel’s personal photographer for more than 30 years. His camera captured the activities of independent intellectuals during the glorious Prague Spring of 1968; the period of Charter 77, a human rights manifesto; and Havel’s life after 1989.
