Documentary Screening and Film Talk: Central Asian Wedding Ceremony. Fulbright Scholar Nargiza Tadjiyeva will talk about traditional Central Asian culture and Central Asian wedding. She will present a documentary about a traditional wedding in Tashkent . The presentation will be followed by the questions-and-answer session. Film Screening:  Since the fall of the Soviet Union a number of Jewish films have come to light for the first time in more than half a century.  These films provide a unique contemporary film record of Ukrainian Jewish history documenting anti-Semitic pogrom, the Beilis blood libel case, the resettlement of Soviet Jewry on collective farms and Baby Yar.  Please join us for the premiere of the English version of Against the Fathers’ Will (RT:44:14), one of the films from this collection, directed by Yevgeni Ivanov-Barkov and based on Sholem Aleichem’s novel In the Storm (Der Mabl).  This remarkable film depicts the conflict between generations during the tumultuous events of the Russian revolution of 1905 and features the actors of the Habima Theater.  Producer:  Irene Ovdey.  Films from the collection of Yuri Morozov.  Special thanks to Joseph Dorman and Leonid Finberg.  Introductory remarks by Irene Ovdey (Producer, Against the Fathers’ Will; Head of Sky River Films). 13 Symposium: "In Memory of Andrei Sakharov (1921-1989): Human Rights and Democracy in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus." Panels will bring together veterans of the human rights movement in the Soviet era to reflect on the new situations and what from their experience might be adaptable to thwarting the trends toward authoritarianism in the region, as well as focus on the impact of what has happened in Ukraine on the situations in Russia and Belarus: the meaning of the "orange" revolution. 10am-5pm, Room 1501, IAB.
