Harriman Institute Presents a Film Screening: FRESCOES
(2002) A documentary by Alexander
Gutman (Russia) In a documentary of stately beauty and moving humanity, Alexander Gutman creates an impressionistic portrait of an Armenian village nearly destroyed by the earthquake of 1988. As he follows activities around a local graveyard, Gutman captures the rituals of daily life in an impoverished town struggling to survive after Armenia's independence from the Soviet Union. Memorable characters a pair of stonecutters, a young boy awaiting his baptism and an aging gravedigger populate a film notable for its poetic Russian sensibility. Introduction and Q & A with the film maker. Room 1219 at 6:30pm.. |
