In a documentary of stately beauty and moving humanity, Alexander Gutman creates an impressionistic portrait of an Armenian village nearly destroyed by the earthquake of 1988. As he follows activities around a local graveyard, Gutman captures the rituals of daily life in an impoverished town struggling to survive after Armenia's independence from the Soviet Union. Memorable characters a pair of stonecutters, a young boy awaiting his baptism and an aging gravedigger populate a film notable for its poetic Russian sensibility. Introduction and Q & A with the film maker. Room 1219 at 6:30pm..

29 The Politics and Security in the Post-Soviet Space features Dr. Fiona Hill (Senior Fellow, Foreign Policy Studies, Brookings Institution) The Siberian Curse.  Room 1219 IAB, 12:15-1:45pm.  Moderated by Prof. Kimberly Marten (Associate Director, HI) 30 31
