The Institute's quarterly survey boasts an international roster of scholars writing on issues and new publications in the various fields represented by the Institute. Past contributors include Roman Szporluk, Barbara Heldt, Rajan Menon, Ellendea Proffer, Alexander J. Motyl, Elizabeth Pond, G. S. Smith, Oleg Rumyantsev, and Padma Desai. Topics range from a critical survey of Russian women's studies and a reappraisal of the current situation in Ukraine to an assessment of studies on the collapse of the Soviet empire and the legacy of the Soviet past. STUDIES OF THE HARRIMAN INSTITUTE
The Studies of the Harriman Institute continues the work of the pioneering book series initiated by the Russian Institute in the 1950s. More than 100 titles authored by Institute faculty, visiting scholars, fellows, and alumni have appeared under the two imprints. Recent titles in the series include Exploring Gogol by Robert A. Maguire (Stanford University Press), Scenarios of Power: Myth and Ceremony in Russian Monarchy by Richard S. Wortman (Princeton University Press), Soldiers in the Proletarian Dictatorship. The Red Army and the Soviet Socialist State by Mark von Hagen (Cornell University Press), and Abram Tertz and the Poetics of Crime by Catherine Theimer Nepomnyashchy (Yale University Press). Authors must have some Institute affiliation, past or present, in order to submit their works for inclusion in the series. THE HARRIMAN LECTURES
Columbia University Press inaugurated its Harriman Lecture Series in 1997 with the publication of Andrei Sinyavsky's The Russian Intelligentsia, a collection of three lectures delivered the previous year at Columbia University. Katherine Verdery's The Political Lives of Dead Bodies: Animating Post-Socialist Politics will be published by Columbia University Press in 1999.
EAST CENTRAL EUROPEAN PUBLICATIONS
The proceedings of the 1996 and 1997 Graduate Student Conferences, on "State- and Nation-Building in East Central Europe" and "Perspectives on Political and Economic Transformations after Communism," respectively, were published in separate volumes by the East Central European Center.
INTERMARIUM
The East Central European Center and the Polish Academy of Sciences' Institute for Political Studies cosponsor the online journal Intermarium. It provides an electronic medium for scholarship and provocative thinking about the history of Central and Eastern Europe following World War II. The editors are Andrzej Paczkowski and John S. SOURCES AND TRANSLATION SERIES
The Institute sponsors the Sources and Translations Series, the most recent title of which is a bilingual edition of Marina Tsvetaeva's After Russia (Ardis Publishers), edited and translated by Michael Naydan. Fertility and Other Stories by Vsevolod Ivanov, translated by Frank Miller and Valentina Brougher (Northwestern University Press, 1998).
