30 SIPA credits, 24 JTS credits

MPA/MA Dual Degree Curriculum Overview

The program will be completed in two-three years depending on the number of JTS Graduate School prerequisites a student completed before enrollment.

The MPA curriculum includes a set of core courses (24 credits) and a summer internship (1.5-3 credits). The JTS course work takes the place of the 15 credit concentration usually required of an MPA student, but dual degree students may opt to use their electives to construct a concentration.

Core Requirements SIPA MPA Degree

Dual-degree MPA/JTS students must complete the following SIPA core courses:

  • U4200/U4201 Economics or U6400/U6401 Economic Analysis (Fall & Spr: 6 credits)
  • U6500 Quantitative Analysis (Fall or Spr: 3 credits)
  • U6110/U6113 Politics of Policymaking (Fall: 4 credits)
  • Management
    Students may choose from:
    • SIPA U6001 Managing in the Public and Not-For- Profit Sectors (Fall & Spr: 3 credits)
    • SIPA U6002 Governance and Public Management in Developing Countries (Fall: 3 credits)
    • SIPA U6003 Analysis of Public Sector Organizations (Fall: 3 credits)
    • SIPA U6004 Effective Strategic Management of Public and Not for Profit Organizations (Fall & Spr: 3 credits)
    • SIPA U6005 Effective Management in the Public Service (Fall & Spr: 3 credits)
    • SIPA U6006 Strategic Thinking and Planning for General Managers (Fall & Spr: 3 credits)
    • EMPA U8225 Public Management: Power of Social Innovation (Fall: 3 credits)
  • Financial Management (Fall or Spr:   3 credits)
    Students may choose from:
    • SIPA U6200 Accounting for International and Public Affairs  (Fall & Spr: 3 credits)
    • INAF U6022 Economics of Finance  (Spring: 3 credits)
    • SIPA U6310 Budgeting for Non-Profits (Fall: 3 credits)
    • SIPA U6320 Budgeting for Government (Spring: 3 credits)
  • U4040 Professional Development (Fall:  .5 credit)
  • U9013 Internship (Fall or Spr: 1.5 or 3 credits)
    Students are required to complete an internship as part of the core curriculum; however, they are not required to register for internship credit.  Students may register for internship credits either in the semester they are completing the internship or anytime after the internship is completed. Maximum of 3 credits allowed.
  • Workshop (Fall or Spr:   3 credits)
    Students should plan to do their Workshop in their final semester.

Core Requirements JTS MA Degree

The JTS curriculum includes a concentration (at least 15 credits) and an enrichment component (up to 12 credits).  The MA in Judaic Studies has two components:

1) 24 credits towards the master’s degree which includes:

  • Two courses in American Jewish social history (6 credits)
  • One course in either modern or medieval Jewish history (3 credits)
  • One course in analyzing contemporary issues in the Jewish community using traditional texts (ethics/philosophy) (3 credits)
  • Israel seminar (3 credits)
  • Three electives (total 9 credits)
  • Four semesters of an integrating seminar (non-credit-bearing)
2)  The Graduate School pre-requisites and program pre-requisite as required (up to 39 additional credits)

Advising

Although students are enrolled full-time at one school or the other in any given semester, they should contact the administrative advisor at both schools at least once per semester to ensure that their study and enrollment plans are cleared by the administration.  The primary faculty and administrative contacts are listed below.
