Biography:
Thomas Bernstein is a professor of political science and a member of the East Asian Institute. Professor Bernstein, who joined the Columbia faculty in 1975, is a specialist on comparative politics, with a focus on China as well as on communist and post-communist systems.

He published a book on Chinese youth (Yale 1977) and is completing a book titled Social Interests in China's Authoritarian Reform Regime: Agriculture and Farmers. He has also written articles and book chapters on a range of topics, including the politics of rural change in the Soviet Union and China, the Mao era, democratization in China, the politics of education, and foreign policy.

Professor Bernstein serves on the editorial board of China Quarterly as well as on the editorial committee of the journal Comparative Politics.

Professor Bernstein received his BA from Harvard University, his PhD from Columbia University, and holds a certificate from the Russian Institute at Columbia University. From 1970 to 1975, he was an assistant professor at Yale University.
