OVERVIEW

The world faces oil market insecurity, worldwide restructuring of natural gas and electricity market systems, massive energy infrastructure requirements for economic development, and pervasive local and global environmental issues in energy production and use.  To contribute in this field, the next generation of industry leaders and energy policy professionals must understand the relevant technologies, economics, institutions, and quantitative methodologies for energy business and policy development.

The International Energy Management and Policy (IEMP) track within the Energy and Environment concentration at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) offers an integrated treatment of the structure and issues of energy business and policy development, and provides a thorough understanding of energy industry fundamentals. This includes the structure and operation of international energy systems, and the business organizations, market organizations and governance structures involved in producing, transporting, and marketing energy products. The IEMP examines economic, environmental, and social policies applicable to the various segments of the energy value chains. It discusses political and strategic issues arising from the unequal distribution of global energy resources and the impact of technological change on the future role of energy in the global economy. Electives are available to permit students to pursue detailed study in petroleum markets and trading, electricity markets, international climate negotiations, urban energy systems, marine transportation systems, energy business and economic development, alternative energy resources, energy project development and finance, and the geopolitics of energy with applications to key regions such as Eurasia and the Middle East.  The concentration is expanding its treatment of quantitative market analysis and project formation.

The information below presents the requirements and schedules for the three available degree tracks for the IEMP track.  Individual course descriptions follow.  An IEMP concentration audit form is linked to at the bottom of this page.  SIPA requires this form to be filled out and signed prior to graduation.  We recommend that all IEMP concentrators meet with the concentration director or advisor at least once each semester and keep a current version of this form in their records to ensure that requirements are being met in a timely manner.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Students in the Energy and Environment Concentration choose to fulfill the requirements of one of the following two tracks:

  • International Energy Management and Policy (IEMP)
  • Environmental Policy and Management (EPM)

International Energy Management and Policy Track (IEMP) Overview:
The Energy Management and Policy Track requires 18 credits, consisting of 6 three-point courses: 3 core courses; 1 workshop; 1 elective in the IEMP Track; and 1 elective in the Environmental Policy and Management Track.
Requirements from the SIPA Core:
    -  SIPA U6400/U6401 Economic Analysis for International Affairs – satisfies SIPA CORE economic requirement
    -  SIPA U6200 Accounting for International and Public Affairs – satisfies SIPA CORE financial Management requirement.
Functional Specializations:  There are two natural functional specializations that exploit the ability to “double count” courses (of course the others also qualify):
    -  Management Specialization (Finance track) is satisfied with: Accounting for IPA (U6200, also counts for SIPA CORE); Corporate Finance (U6301, also counts for IEMP Track Requirement), and a third finance course, for example, International Capital Markets (U6045).
    -  Applied Science Specialization is satisfied with:  Alternative Energy Resources (U4792 or EIAE W4200, also counts for IEMP Energy Elective), Environmental Science for Decision Makers (U4735, also counts for IEMP Environmental Elective), and one other science course.
