SIPA sent more than 700 graduates out into the world to change it for the better on Saturday, May 14. Graduation speaker Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General and SIPA Global Fellow, reminded departing students that their new diploma carries big responsibilities: “It is a responsibility to apply the knowledge you have gained and the analytical skills you have learned to help find and deliver the solutions to improve lives, extend opportunities, and serve your communities.”

SIPA recognized the winners of its Distinguished Teaching Awards, Scott Barrett and Alan Brott, for their commitment and excellence in the classroom.
Eighteen students also were
awarded for their outstanding work and dedication to public service.

SIPA graduates will join 35,000 people on College Walk tomorrow for Columbia University’s Commencement. President Lee C. Bollinger will deliver the commencement address and confer degrees on 12,000 students. The ceremony highlights a week of exercises marking Columbia University’s 257th academic year.

SIPA faculty continue to examine the implications of Osama bin Laden’s death and what is next for the war on terror. Professors Hassan Abbas, Stuart Gottlieb, Austin Long (left), and Gary Sick are among the faculty featured in a variety of interviews and blog posts.

Fourteen years ago, Hassan Abbas served on the police force in his homeland, Pakistan. Today, Abbas teaches at SIPA as the Quaid-i-Azam Professor with the South Asia Institute. After the death of Osama bin Laden, he has been in wide demand for his analysis of Pakistani security and public affairs, including for the New York Times, NBC News, and Al Jazeera.

Grads Go Green with Alternative Energy Fund
As gas prices skyrocket and oil consumption increases, the need for alternative energy sources is apparent. Just a year after graduating, two SIPA alumni are working hard to grow an investment fund to develop alternative energy projects.
