Kofi Annan Speaks at SIPA’s Graduation
Former United Nations Secretary-General, Nobel Peace laureate, and SIPA Global Fellow Kofi Annan will deliver the School’s graduation address on May 14. The seventh Secretary-General of the UN, Annan is credited with revitalizing the institution and its global brand. About 750 students will graduate from SIPA’s seven degree programs in a ceremony to be held on the main campus of Columbia University.

Denis Morozov graduates this month from SIPA’s Program in Economic Policy Management and already has a high-profile post lined up – a directorship at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The EBRD uses tools of investment to build market economies and democracies in 30 nations, and Morozov will be Russia’s representative on its board.

SIPA hosted a trio of world-renowned economists on April 28 for a lively discussion on the global economy and the challenges ahead. Jacob A. Frenkel, chairman of JPMorgan Chase and CEO of the Group of Thirty; Joseph Stiglitz, University Professor and chair of Columbia’s Committee on Global Thought; and Min Zhu, special advisor to the managing director of the International Monetary Fund participated in a panel moderated by SIPA Professor Merit E. Janow.

Making a Difference With Solar Energy
Thanks to a study by SIPA students, New York City is making plans to install solar panels atop two closed landfills. The program could generate power for 50,000 homes and help the city reduce carbon gas emissions.

Jeffrey Sachs: "Push the Envelope"
SIPA welcomed 150 newly admitted students on April 12 with a short lecture from Professor Jeffrey Sachs. He spoke about climate change, poverty, and other challenges facing the planet, and encouraged students to come to SIPA and take on those challenges. "We are at a new juncture in history," he said. "This isn’t really about book learning about traditional solutions. This is about a juncture in the world that is taking us into uncharted territory."

SIPA honored alumnus Mitchell D. Silber (MIA '05) at its eleventh annual Global Leadership Awards on April 14. Silber, pictured with NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Dean John Coatsworth, directs the New York Police Department’s counterterrorism intelligence analysis unit. Launched in 2002 after the September 11 attacks, Silber’s team comprises civilian experts who help NYPD officers and detectives understand and uncover terrorist networks.
