Financial Aid

Financing a graduate education is a challenge. To assist in this regard, SIPA's Office of Admissions and Financial Aid works with SIPA students to explore their options for loans, fellowships, and work study programs.  SIPA’s fellowship and assistantship funds (funds that do not have to be repaid after graduation) are very limited, and students should put together financial scenarios that assume support from SIPA and that assume no direct funding support from the School.  Statistics on the School’s fellowships, assistantships, and average student loan debt are available under “Types of Aid.”

Many SIPA students also bring in fellowship funds that they have secured through external sources.  For the 2007-2008 academic year, students brought in close to five million dollars in fellowships that do not need to be repaid upon graduation.  A great resource to search for such awards is the SIPA Database of External Grants and Fellowships that can be accessed at: www.sipa.columbia.edu/fellowships/. We recommend that interested applicants start to search for fellowships, as soon as possible and not wait until after submitting an admission application to start the search process.

Information about the financial aid process is detailed in the links in the menu on the right hand side of this page. If you have questions or concerns after you have read through the material on this page, you can email or call the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Most of the forms required for the aid process are available in this office or via the financial aid forms link on the right.
