Endowed Fellowships and Scholarships
Fellowships and scholarships are awarded by the school to persons to further their studies. Awards are made annually for a period of up to one academic year, and full-time enrollment (12 points minimum per term) at SIPA is required. Awards may be cancelled at any time for unsatisfactory academic progress or failure to comply with the terms of the award.
Endowed Fellowships at the School of International and Public Affairs
Thanks to the generous support of our alumni and friends who have provided endowments over the years, we are able to provide a number of additional fellowships to SIPA students. The named funds are listed below.
There is no separate application process for these awards. All prospective and continuing students who submit their fellowship application form on time will be considered for all awards the school provides.
The Lisa Anderson Scholarship Fund
Established in 2007 in honor of Lisa Anderson’s leadership as dean of SIPA from 1997 to 2007 with funds from a community of donors, the fund provides scholarships to SIPA students. The named funds are listed below.
Julius Blocker Scholars Program Fund
Created from the estate of Julius G. Blocker, ‘56, this gift will fund the Blocker Scholars Program Fund, fostering an international exchange program between SIPA and German universities.
Sharon and James Broadhead Fund
A gift of James Broadhead, '63, and his wife, Sharon, the fund's purpose is to support the community of scholars in the International Fellows Program.
Brown-Meyers Fellowship Fund
A gift of Dr. Judith Brown, '71, and her husband, Michael Meyers, the gift provides fellowship support for the community of scholars in the International Fellows program at the School of International and Public Affairs.
Robert M. and Buena H. Chilstrom Fellowship Fund
A gift of Robert Chilstrom, '69, and Buena Chilstrom to provide scholarships to needy students at the School of International and Public Affairs.
CICR SIPA Fund
The Center for International Conflict Resolution (CICR) at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea of the Italian Government are pleased to announce the establishment of the Fund for Environment and Conflict Resolution (The Fund). Over a period of three years, the $2 Million Fund will provide support for research, teaching and fellowships. Thanks to The Fund, CICR will promote research conducted by prominent scholars at Columbia University, in Italy and other countries around the issue of the global environment and conflict resolution.
The student must be from one of the following countries/regions in order to be considered for this fellowship: Italy, the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, Peru, Colombia, China, the Middle East, and/or North Africa.

Andrew W. and Dorothy Cordier Fellowship Fund
Established with funds provided from various donors, the fellowship was established to honor Andrew Cordier, dean of SIPA from 1962–72 and President of Columbia University from 1968–70, and his wife, Dorothy. The fund provides several fellowships annually to students in the School of International and Public Affairs.
Joanne Toor Cummings Fund
A gift of Joanne Toor Cummings, the fund provides merit scholarships to students of the School of International and Public Affairs.
Leitner Family Fellowship Fund
Established in 2006 by a generous gift from James Leitner, ‘77, and his wife Sandra Shahinian Leitner, ’76, the fund provides fellowships to graduate students enrolled at the School of International and Public Affairs.
Annette Fox Fellowship Fund
Established by a gift of Dr. Joseph Ha, '71, and named in honor of Dr. Annette Fox, widow of Dr. William T.R. Fox (who founded the Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia), the fund supports students of need at the School of International and Public Affairs.
Dr. John N. Hazard Fellowship Fund
A gift of James Leitner, '77, and Sandra Leitner, '76, and named for Dr. John N. Hazard, an academic specialist in Russian Legal History and professor of law, the fund supports fellowships for first-year SIPA students.
Ralph O. Hellmold Fellowship Fund
A gift of Ralph Hellmold, '64, the fund provides fellowship support to students at the School of International and Public Affairs.
Everett Kelsey Memorial Fellowship Fund
Established with funds provided by various donors, the fund is named in honor of Everett Kelsey, a former student of Columbia University. Income from the fund provides fellowship support to students at the School of International and Public Affairs.
The Global Leaders Fellowship Fund
Established in 2006 by Paul and Andrea Thurman, the Global Leaders Fellowship Fund builds support from a community of donors. The fund provides scholarships to students enrolled at SIPA.
Karen J. Klitzman Memorial Fellowship Fund for the Elimination of Terrorism and Resolution Conflict
Established by the Klitzman family and with the support of other donors, the fund is named in honor of Karen J. Klitzman, '88, who was killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Income from the fund provides fellowship support to a student of the School of International and Public Affairs devoted to study of the elimination of terrorism and the resolution of conflict.
Robert I. Kopech Fellowship Fund
A gift of Robert Kopech, '77, the fund provides fellowship support to students who choose to pursue
concurrent degrees at SIPA and the Graduate School of Business of Columbia University.
Mr. and Mrs. Leiser Krieger Scholarship Fund
A gift of Charles Krieger, '50, in honor of his parents, the fund provides scholarship support to students of the School of International and Public Affairs.
Joseph Kraft Fellowship Fund
Established by Gilman Kraft in memory of his brother Joseph Kraft, the distinguished journalist and widely syndicated Washington columnist, the fund provides support to students pursuing the international affairs degree.
Charles and Marie Lippey Fellowship Fund
A gift of Brian C. Lippey, '78, and Jackie Macleod in honor of Brian's parents, the fund provides fellowship support to students at the School of International and Public Affairs concentrating in international finance and business.
David Lipschultz Fellowship Fund
A gift of Juliana Lipschultz and her family in memory of her husband David; the fund will provide fellowships to students enrolled in the School of International and Public Affairs with preference given to students of Latino heritage.
Walter N. Maguire Fellowship Fund
A gift of Mrs. Helen Maguire Muller, the fund provides fellowship support to students from Africa, Latin America, and Asia enrolled at the School of International and Public Affairs.
Marber Family Fellowship Fund
A gift of Peter Marber, '87, the fund provides fellowship support to female students interested in global business and finance at the School of International and Public Affairs.
The Most Honorable Bapsy Marchioness of Winchester Award in Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms
A gift of the Marchioness of Winchester, the fund provides an award to graduate students at SIPA. The candidate must submit a paper on the topic of international peace and understanding.
Mosse-Noble Fellowship Fund
A gift of Dr. Dorothy Noble, the fund provides fellowship support to students enrolled in the School of International and Public Affairs.
David Ottaway Fellowship Fund
Established in 2007 by a generous gift from David Ottaway, the fund provides scholarships to SIPA students with financial need.
Dasturdaza Doctor Jal Pavry Award for International Peace and Understanding
A gift of The Most Honorable Bapsy Marchioness of Winchester in memory of her brother, Dr. Jal Pavry, the fund provides an award to students at SIPA. The candidate must submit a paper on the topic of international peace and understanding.
Dr. Robert Randle Fellowship Fund
A gift of Malcom Stewart, '79, and named in honor of Dr. Robert Randle, former Associate Dean of SIPA and Director of the International Fellows Program, the fund provides support to the community of fellows in the International Fellows program, as well as fellowship support to SIPA students.
Julie Rasmussen Fellowship Fund
A gift of Julie Rasmussen, IA '90, the fund provides fellowship support to qualified SIPA students, who are American citizens and who choose Russian Studies as their primary concentration.
Jeffrey L. Schmidt Fellowships
A gift of Jeffrey Schmidt, IA '79, this fellowship honors his teacher Ainslie T. Embree, who has served Columbia University as both dean and professor and is awarded to a SIPA student specializing in African studies.
C.V. Starr Scholarship Fund
A gift from the Starr Foundation, the C.V. Starr Scholarship Fund provides fellowship support to SIPA students based on merit and need.
Alice Stetten Fellowship Fund
A gift of Alice Stetten, a great friend to students of the school, the fund provides a number of fellowships to students enrolled at the School of International and Public Affairs.
Rachel L. Spear Fellowship
A gift of Rachel Spear, the fund provides fellowships to SIPA students, who plan to pursue a career in the diplomatic service and have demonstrated ability in one or more foreign languages, as well as knowledge of political science and economics. Preference will be given to graduates of Middlebury College.
The Anna Lord Strauss Fellowship
A gift of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mali to commemorate the life of Mrs. Mali's sister, Anna Lord Strauss; the fund provides fellowship support to women enrolled in SIPA, who demonstrate citizen concern and leadership potential, as well as excellence in academic performance.
