Carbon Finance and Environmental Markets Association (EFA) at SIPA

Back to Student Organizations

The purpose of the SIPA Environmental Finance Association (EFA) is to create a forum bringing the SIPA community to leading practitioners and scientists in climate change, carbon finance, energy utilities, environmental markets and ecosystem services. Carbon markets are free-market devices, however, they are directly created by policymakers, making SIPA a natural choice of hosting and benefiting from such an organization. Being a leader on all global issues, it would be imperative to bring SIPA into the foray of climate change and fill a necessary vacuum with the creation of the SIPA Environmental Finance Association. With a possible future partnership with the Columbia Climate Center of the Earth Institute, the Association would like to connect the vast resources of the Earth Institute and its partners with students interested in combating climate change through Kyoto flexible mechanisms. As the SIPA Energy Association is a broad platform for energy topics with their sponsorship with the CEMTPP, the SIPA Carbon Finance Group with the CCC will offer a specific scope of climate change, but with the broad depth of carbon-related fields. Activities include speaker events, related field trips, networking events within the private sector—banks, energy companies, integrated utilities, and consultancies—and in the public sector—NGOs, the World Bank, UNEP and the UNDP Carbon Facility.
