The New York Immigration Coalition aims to achieve a fairer and more just society that values the contributions of immigrants and extends opportunity to all. The NYIC promotes immigrants’ full civic participation, fosters their leadership, and provides a unified voice and a vehicle for collective action for New York’s diverse immigrant communities.
The New York Immigration Coalition advocates for immigrants at the local, state, and federal level. To guide advocacy efforts, NYIC has developed an “Immigrant Blueprint for New York" that represents our long-term vision for New York’s immigrants to achieve their rightful place in this state.
To further this mission, NYIC has tasked a SIPA Capstone team to conduct a thorough investigation of the "sanctuary" and anti-immigrant policies throughout New York State. The goal of this project is to both provide a comprehensive understanding of the policies in every county in New York State, including consideration of the social and political contexts that have promoted these policies. What makes a county shift towards anti-immigration policies or practices? What factors lend themselves to more inclusive communities? This project would grant Capstone students practical knowledge on the factors that lead to the enactment of policies and/or the use of practices by government agencies.
