Pencils of Promise (PoP) creates schools, programs and global communities around the common goal of education for all. PoP works in conjunction with communities, local governments and education ministries to ensure the sustainability of their programs. Their long-term goal is for national governments to adopt their literacy-focused model, leading to stronger student outcomes and better life opportunities.

In hopes of expanding to Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region, PoP asked the Capstone team to develop a self-guided tool to determine whether a given country can be considered for expansion by PoP based on certain pre-defined criteria.  To achieve this, the Capstone team analyzed product portfolio available in education for developing countries and conducted a demand-side analysis in ECOWAS region.

In addition to developing a Country Scorecard that will serve as a valuable tool for effective first-level screening and decision making, the team provided PoP with the following recommendations:

  1. Continue to partner with local leadership to strengthen relationships to ensure contracts and understandings will continue;
  2. Continue to engage the community to gauge alignment of needs and  goals, and to establish community ownership of schools;
  3. Continue to establish cooperation with government by identifying and securing key government branches;
  4. And finally, continue to build a network by partnering with other NGOs and keep prioritizing education.
