The Ph.D. in Sustainable Development is administered through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at Columbia University. 100% of the application process can be completed online through the GSAS online application here. Please review the GSAS Admissions page thoroughly and contact that office directly for any questions or concerns.

Statement of Academic Purpose
Three Letters of Recommendation

Choose recommenders who, individually or in aggregate, will give the best sense of your qualifications for pursuing a PhD.

Standard Résumé/CV
Transcripts

Applicants must send transcripts detailing classes taken and grades received for every completed post-secondary degree program.

GRE and TOEFL Scores

All students are required to submit GRE scores. For students who are non-native speakers of English, the TOEFL test is required.  The only exception to this rule is for students who have completed a bachelor's degree at an institution in an English-speaking country. Students who have completed only a master's degree with English as the language of instruction must still submit TOEFL scores in support of their application.
