Fuchs Reappointed to FDIC Advisory Committee

Posted Mar 28 2013

Professor Ester R. Fuchs, the director of SIPA's Urban and Social Policy concentration, has been reappointed to the FDIC's Advisory Committee on Economic Inclusion for a two-year term. The committee, known as ComE-IN, provides the FDIC with advice and innovative policy recommendations on expanding access to banking services among underserved populations in order to promote asset accumulation by individuals and financial stability.

The challenge for the committee, Fuchs says, has not simply been to encourage underserved populations to use banks but also for banks to provide their basic financial services to low-income populations in safe, accessible, and affordable ways. Among these services are check cashing, money orders, remittances, stored value cards, short-term loans, and savings accounts.

Fuchs currently chairs ComE-IN's Mobile Device Subcommittee and has been a member of the Financial Literacy, Mortgage, and Incentives Working Groups. She has served continuously on the committee since it was established in in November 2006.
