The student-run Journal of International Affairs celebrated its latest issue, which examines the “Fourth Industrial Revolution,” at an event at SIPA on February 4.

In an introductory letter, the journal’s editors define the titular revolution as “the next phase of global economic transformation.” They suggest that the integration of automated processes and digital innovation with physical systems of production will “fundamentally change how humans all over the world live their lives.”

Students, professors, and practitioners — including several authors featured in the issue — gathered on IAB’s 15th floor to discuss this revolution and its effects on public policy. Prospective changes and their potential consequences provided a jumping-off point for the evening’s discussion.

In a twist on the traditional panel discussion, each expert interviewed the next in turn, in a format characterized as the “long conversation.”

Participants included:

  • Rachel Korberg, a program officer for the Future of Workers Initiative at the Ford Foundation
  • Francesca Rossi, AI ethics global leader at IBM Research; member of the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence
  • Elizabeth Pollitzer, co-founder and director of Portia, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of research and innovation outcomes, including for sustainable development.
  • Federica Saliola, director of the World Bank's World Development Report 2019: The Changing Nature of Work
  • Susan Hayter, senior technical advisor at the International Labor Office
