Meet New Faculty: Eric Olson

Eric Olson is a former U.S. Navy SEAL who rose to become a four-star admiral and commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command. He retired in 2011 after almost four decades of active service. A Naval Academy graduate, Olson received his MA from the Naval Postgraduate School, where he studied political and military affairs with an emphasis on Africa and the Middle East. His overseas service included assignments in Israel, Egypt, and Tunisia.

What do you study?

I study the behavior of nations and people.

What do you teach?

I will teach about the need for evolving national security strategy to address the current asymmetrical challenges.

What do you consider today’s most pressing global issue?

I think the multiple impacts of dwindling natural resources is the most pressing global issue.

What professional achievement are you most proud of?

I am proud to have completed my military career with my professional reputation and family intact.

Why did you choose to come to SIPA?

I was attracted by the high quality and international flavor of the student body.
