Posted Jul 11 2013

On July 2, SIPA’s Program in Economic Policy Management (PEPM) welcomed its Class of 2014 to Morningside Heights with an all-day program on IAB’s 15th floor. Students from around the world heard from Merit Janow, SIPA’s new dean; Guillermo Calvo, PEPM's director; and other school and university officials.

This mid-career professional program emphasizes the skills and challenges of economic policymaking, with a focus on emerging and transitional markets. Students choose to complete tracks in either economic policy management or international energy management en route to a master’s degree in public administration.

Participants  in the intensive 14-month program conclude their studies with internships at global institutions such as the World Bank, where they put their classroom knowledge into real-world practice.

Since its inception more than 20 years ago, PEPM has graduated nearly 1,000 policymakers from more than 140 countries. The new class lives up to the program’s repution as an international magnet, drawing almost 60 students from more than 30 countries. Ten students from Japan make up the largest contingent, while other countries represented by multiple students include China, India, Italy, Pakistan, and Spain.

The new students have six years of work experience on average, and about half already hold a master’s degree in economics, management, or a related area. The class includes leading professionals and policymakers from around the world, including a well-known news anchor from Japan; head of research at the Central Bank of Nicaragua; the National Bank of Kyrgyz Republic’s chief economist, and a top advisor to Colombia’s minister of economic planning.

PEPM looks forward to an exciting year, and wishes great success to all its new students.
