Welcome to SIPA
Dear SIPA Admitted students:
Congratulations and welcome to Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA)! We hope that you find answers to all your questions on the Admitted Students pages of our site.
We believe that SIPA is the clear choice for students because it is the world’s most global public policy school. More than any other school, SIPA is focused on creating, exploring, and communicating a transnational perspective on public policy issues. We both explore emerging global policy areas and apply global best practices to local issues. We focus on crucial issues for tomorrow—such as global finance and economics, public health, security, conflict management, climate change, energy, development, and sustainability—that increasingly occupy a transnational space and challenge us to global collective action.
SIPA also provides a global classroom experience. Our student population is almost 50% international, and—drawing on the convening power of New York City—we host leaders from every part of the globe and all areas of policy making. Recent speakers at SIPA include Kofi Annan, Larry Summers, Paul Volcker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Carmen Reinhart, Samantha Power, Michelle Bachelet, and numerous U.N. ambassadors. It’s an exciting time to be here.
SIPA continues to offer students a rigorous grounding in the social sciences matched with a focus on practical application. We believe that policy should be based on evidence, systematic knowledge about how the world works and what the consequences of policymaking might be. We want students of global public policy to be able to win in this arena, armed with systematic knowledge and scientific evidence about how the world works, why problems arise, and how best to solve them. We believe that SIPA is in a unique position to provide this kind of education.
To learn more about the SIPA experience, please explore this website. If you would like to talk with alumni, students, or faculty about SIPA and how it can work for you, let us know and we'll make the introduction. If you are unable to travel to New York before May, and we are unable to meet you in person, please join us online to help you make your decision.
Again, welcome to SIPA. We’re thrilled with the native intelligence and life experience of our admitted class, and we want to be sure you can be part of this growing community. Please explore the School and let us know how we can help you to join us at SIPA this fall.
