Personal Details
Liza Featherstone teaches “Writing on Policy” at SIPA. She is also the first-ever advice columnist for The Nation, where she is also a contributing editor. She also writes an opinion column for amNY. Professor Featherstone's new book is Divining Desire: Focus Groups and the Culture of Consultation, forthcoming in February 2018 from O/R Books. She is the editor of False Choices: The Faux Feminism of Hillary Rodham Clinton (Verso, 2016), author of Selling Women Short: The Landmark Battle for Workers’ Rights at Wal-Mart (Basic Books, 2005), and a co-author of Students Against Sweatshops (Verso, 2002).
A journalist, essayist and critic, she has been published by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Ms., The San Francisco Chronicle, Slate, The American Prospect, Columbia Journalism Review, Glamour, CNN.com, The Daily Beast, Salon, Teen Vogue, The Women’s Review of Books, Los Angeles Times, Dissent, The Guardian, In These Times and many other publications. Professor Featherstone is also a part-time editor for Believe.Earth, an international environmental website based in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In addition to SIPA, she teaches in the Literary Reportage program at New York University’s Arthur Carter Journalism Institute.
Professor Featherstone was the Belle Zeller Visiting Professor of Public Policy at Brooklyn College from 2013-2015. She has received journalism fellowships from Columbia Journalism School, the Nation Institute and the Hoover Institution. She is a frequent guest speaker on college campuses, and often interviewed about her work by radio, TV, podcast and fellow print journalists.
