Stepan Will Receive Karl Deutsch Award in Comparative Politics

Alfred Stepan, Wallace Sayre Professor of Government at SIPA and a former dean of the school, will receive the Karl Deutsch Award for comparative research and theory in Madrid this July. Previous recipients of the award, which is given every three years at the World Congress of the International Political Science Association, include Giovanni Sartori (2009), the late Columbia scholar Charles Tilly (2006), and Juan J. Linz (2003).

Stepan’s recent book Crafting State Nations: India and Other Multinational Democracies, written with Linz and Yogendra Yadav, was published by Johns Hopkins in 2011. His most recent articles are “Comparative Perspectives on Inequality and the Quality of Democracy in the United States,” also with Linz, in Perspectives on Politics (December 2011); “Tunisia’s Transition and the Twin Tolerations” in Journal of Democracy (April 2012); and the upcoming “Rituals of Respect: Sufis and Secularists in Senegal in Comparative Perspective” in Comparative Politics (July 2012).  


The founder/director of the Center for the Study of Democracy, Toleration, and Religion, Stepan will be on sabbatical next year to complete a book tentatively titled Democracy and the World’s Religions: Crafting the Twin Tolerations.
